A number of Bishop Lynch High School Girl Scouts from Troops 1562, 2432 and 1433 have been working extremely hard on their Gold Award projects. Each week, we will cast the spotlight on one of these stellar young ladies and recognize them for their incredible effort by letting them tell their story.
“Sole Hope is an organization in Uganda that helps children and adults beat jiggers (chigoe flea). A jigger is a parasite in Africa that likes to burrow themsel
ves into the flesh of humans and lay their eggs. They come in the hundreds and their infections are can be very deadly. There have been reports of ulcerations, lymphangitis, loss of toenails, amputations, paralysis and in a couple of cases, death. These children and adults go to school and work everyday without any shoes to protect them from this parasite. I made a PowerPoint and presented to various groups in my parish as well as reached out to a high school. I also made a tutorial video and a brochure explaining how to make shoes out of old denim, and have made almost 300 pairs of shoes. These shoes will be shipped to Uganda where they will sew them together for minimum wage.
